Supporting your mental health at work

What are you doing to support your mental health at work?

According to the Mental Health Foundation 15% of workers are estimated to have a mental health condition and mental health was the 5th most common reason for absence from the workplace in 2022.

We spend so much time working whether at the office, at home or in the community, and while it might seem obvious, but work can have a huge impact on our mental health. It can give us a sense of purpose, friendship and support, but can also be a source or anxiety and stress.

World Mental Health Day focused last year on workplace mental health. We thought that we’d share a few ideas that everyone can use to help them with their mental health at work:

  1. Bring your dog to work. There’s nothing better than having a pet to cuddle or play with during the day. We’ve done it and it works – give it a try.
  2. Eat well. Have nuts, fruit and other healthy snacks available for staff in the office or at home. An over reliance on caffeine and sugary sweets won’t help with stress or anxiety.
  3. Take a break. Preferably in the fresh air. There is nothing better that grabbing some fresh air when you need it. Have a coffee outside rather than at your desk. Sit in the sun. Stretch your legs. Get a standing desk. Moving and breathing all help us to feel energised.
  4. Do something you enjoy. Share a hobby you enjoy with your team. Concentrating on it for a while can take your mind off things. It can also boost your self-esteem and confidence.
  5. Talk it out. If you need to, find a colleague, friend or other support to have a chat. Law Care – the mental health charity for the legal sector provide expert help to lawyers at all levels with mental health support. If you need to, give them a call and they will be happy to help.
